(MYFOX NATIONAL) - First there was the movie "Snakes on a Plane." Now there's a real-life story involving scorpions on a plane.
A man on a flight from Phoenix to Indianapolis said he was bitten by one of the scary critters on Sunday.
"I thought it was a seatbelt or whatever and next thing I know I feel something crawling up my leg," said 44-year-old Douglas Herbstsommer of Gilbert, Ariz. "I went to go sweep it and that's when I felt the sting."
The scorpion bit Herbstsommer right between his fingers. He said the pain was excruciating.
"[It felt] like about 50 bees stinging you at one time in the same area," he said.
Herbstsommer immediately killed the scorpion with his shoe before it could get to his 10-year-old son Jeremy.
"You could actually see a line of venum and there were guts in there," Jeremy said.
Then the Herbstsommers opened the overhead compartment and found more scorpions next to their luggage.
"Sure enough there were three little babies -- one of them was already dead and there were two alive so I took my flip-flop off and killed them both," Herbstsommer added.
The situation created commotion among the passengers. "They were getting up on their chairs with their knees up," Herbstsommer explained.
No one is sure how the scorpions got on the plane.
Herbstsommer said he went through security just like everybody else. He sent his carry-on luggage through the X-ray machine, but not one of the scorpions were ever detected.
Dr. Brent Furbee said the scorpions probably wouldn't have shown up in the X-ray even if they were in the bag.
"They wouldn't show up on X-ray and these things are built to hide so they can be in a suitcase and you'll never find it until they'll find you," Furbee explained.
Herbstsommer was OK after being stung. If you're under the age of 6, a scorpion sting could be deadly.
