MOUNT AIRY, N.C. (AP) -- Federal investigators say it could be days before they make preliminary determinations about what caused a private plane to crash while trying to land at the Mount Airy airport.
The crash killed all six aboard. Investigators recovered the plane's voice recorder from the wreckage of the King Air C-90-A.
National Transportation Safety Board investigator Todd Gunther says investigators did not believe inflight fire or mechanical control failure caused the crash.
Six men aboard the plane were headed to a hunting trip in Virginia when the plane crashed.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown says the aircraft appeared to come in to land too high and veered off to come back when it crashed.
Investigators said the plane left the Polk County airport at 10:24 am.
John Shelton, Surry County's director of emergency services, identified the six victims as 46-year-old Hal Echols, 46-year-old Steve Simpson,; 49-year-old Robert Butler; 46-year-old Tony Gunther; 52-year-old Frank Ruggiero; and 50-year-old John Wesley Rakestraw, who was piloting the plane when it took off.
The Georgia governor's office says Rakestraw, Simpson and Echols were prominent Georgia Republicans.

NTSB finds no evidence of mechanical problems before plane crash

يفيدالتقرير الفيدرالي عن الحادث بأن الطائرة كانت سليمة ولم يكن بها أي عطل ميكانيكي قبل الحادث كما أشارت بعض التقارير الصحافية بذلك.
ويذكر التقرير بأن الطائرة كانت في مراحل الهبوط التدريجي إلى المدرج من أرتفاع 2000 قدم وعلى مسافة ميل من المدّرج بعد ذلك قامت بالإلتفاف إلى جهة اليسار مع الصعود في حركة طبيعية حيث لوحظة على الرادار ترتفع إلى 2300 قدم قبل أن يلاحظ سقوط مقدمة الطائرة إلى الأسفل، والذي أدى بها إلى الإرتطام في الأرض بأحد الحقول القريبة من المطار.

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- Federal investigators said there is no evidence of mechanical problems or fire in a twin-engine plane that nose-dived into a neighborhood in Mount Airy, N.C., two weeks ago, killing six.
A preliminary report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board Wednesday found that the plane came in to high and missed its initial approach. Radar data showed the plane making its final approach at an altitude 2,000 feet and over a mile from the airport. Two minutes later, radar showed the plane left of the runway at 2,300 feet.
Investigators said the aircraft continued banking to the left and started climbing again before nose-diving out of the clouds and crashing into a back yard near the Mount Airy-Surry County Airport.
The Feb. 1 crash killed all six people on board. The plane took off in Cedartown, Ga., and the passengers were headed to a hunting and golf resort in Meadows of Dan, Va.
