A male passenger on board a Shenzhen Airlines (ZH) flight was arrested for attempting to set a fire while the plane was landing on Saturday night, the authorities said.

The flight ZH9648 en route from Taizhou to Guangzhou, performed by an Airbus A320-200, Registration B-6613, was on approach to Guangzhou when a passenger began to handle gasoline and a lighter and managed to set a fire. The attempted arson incident ended with the passenger restrained by flight attendants and other surrounding passengers. The aircraft touched down safely on the runway No. 3 at 1:01 a.m. local time on Sunday, Guangzhou Bayun International Airport (CAN) said in a statement.

The pilot issued a mayday call and the plane was guided into Guangzhou airport. All 95 passengers and nine crew were evacuated through emergency slides. Two passengers aboard the flight suffered minor injuries were taken to hospital, Shenzhen Airlines said.

The incident appears to point to a serious breakdown in security at Taizhou Luqiao Airport (HYN). China bans the carrying of cigarette lighters and flammable substances, including spirits, aboard all flights.
