We really lucked out in the monitor area last week. Here are two very rare animals... These are 16x9 aspect ratio monitors. Dimensions are 22" diagonal, 19" left to right and 10.75" in height. The best part of this addition is that we can go full scale on the PFD/ND/ECAM displays. The challenge will be trying to keep them out of site behind the main instrument panels.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ullletters.jpg

This is a shot of the entire lettering kit. I have marked off the sections of the flightdeck to make it slightly easier to see whats involved. This sheet is just short of three meters in length (9 feet). Approx. nine months of work went into creating this. Thanks to Joe for keepin us accurate and to Don for his patience in the printing process.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...lettering1.jpg

Took a close up shot of some of the lettering from the Center Pedestal Lettering Kit I picked up yesterday. .

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...lettering2.jpg

A second shot showing the rear section of the Pedestal and some of the lettering. This is still the glossy paper style. Tomorrow we pick up the Matte finish type and then we are complete on the lettering needs for our sim and all the kits we have sent out to date! Thanks again to all of those folks hanging in for us to get things perfect!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ages/pcos5.jpg

A side of yours truly (P Cos) working away. Laying out on the floor is real A320 Flightdeck carpeting courtesy of Joe. I spent several hours scrubbbing and cleaning it and it looks great. The cutouts help line things up too! (I am not lined up in this shot).

الجزء 2

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ages/shell.jpg

More good fortune landed our way at the A320 Project. Over the past year or so we have been talking with a great person at an aerospace company and they managed to get a hold of this unit for us from an older sim that is being rebuilt. This is the Fuselage shell from an A320 Flight Training Device. Not the real thing but close!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/shell2.jpg

Still strapped onto the flatbed. Some of the customizing cuts from the previous owner can be seen at the nose on the Captains side. Nothing we can't patch and repair though.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/shell1.jpg

Sitting in its temporary home for the time being. Lots to figure out. This is not in the same league as Matt and James but its close and WE have to get this into a basement! Hmmm.. I think there may be some more cutting yet...

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellbros.jpg

I have made reference to my brother Steve over the past year and I think this is his first pic on the page. This shot gives you some perspective on size. Its in scale from what we can tell.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/scosseat.jpg

S Cos has been working on the seat parts and here he is showing me how the setup will work. Steve and his friend Ron cut this VW frame in half then rewelded it back together after removing a few inches. Looks like we are going to have adjustments!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/rudder.jpg

More help from "R" today as we brought home a pair of A320 FTD rudder pedals. These look like the real thing and feel amazing. They are utilizing shock absorbers and have a nice "Heavy" feel.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/rudder1.jpg

Here is the pair of them. One set needs to be reassembled but they are pristine. "R" even managed to hold onto the link bar so that we can get both sides working together in unison. Nice touch! It's been a fantastic week around here. Special thanks to "R".

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...glarebuild.jpg
This weekend we decided to take a run at building the framing and support sections for the instrument panels and glare. This shot details the bottom of the glare panel being built. Steve and his friend Ron line up the piece.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...larebuild1.jpg

Following Ron's advice we decided to go with a 1/2" piece of MDF for the Glare bottom. Ron routered a lip at the leading edge for the Panels to sit in. This works very well and offers increased strength over our previous attempts.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...larebuild2.jpg
Part of the top image shows Steve drawing out the vertical Panel support areas. This was routered out allowing us to firmly attach the sections that hold the Glare Panels in place. This shot shows the vertical support pieces we added on the sidestick areas.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/fullsim7.jpg

Here is a shot of Steve who has just finished explaining to me that if I spent more time building and less time updating this site we would be flying.. He's right... no more updates!!! Kidding... Good shot here for getting a feel for the size of this setup. (Steve! Where are my seats!!??)

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/fullsim6.jpg

Here is a close up shot with all our panel parts in place. We also added a sheet under the Pedestal panels for extra support (Not seen in this shot). The Monitor support shelves are visible now. They will eventually have "Fake" pull out shelves in front to hide them.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...joemonitor.jpg

Joe sent in an update covering the installation of the Captains side monitor. This shot shows Joe trial fitting to get a look at clearances. Its tight, no question... OH! Thats Don Lafontaines FREEFD software! Looks great!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...rtmonitor2.jpg

Joe took a section of the monitor shelf out to make sure he had sufficient height. Things can get really tight in here so plan ahead. We are looking at our wide screen monitors and scratching our heads for this reason!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...monitorset.jpg
Here is a close up of the monitor in its resting place.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...nelmonitor.jpg

Here is a larger overview of the application. Big step forward here for Joe. His setup includes two hefty computers ready to go in a network so he is cruising!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../platform1.jpg

Tough to see perhaps but this is the new platform Steve and Ron were working on last night. Constructed with 2" x 4" lumber it sits about 12" above sea level, errr the floor I mean.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../platform2.jpg

Here is the reason for the platform. Rudder pedals. These fellas need almost a foot of depth with all the mechanisms below. Good lesson learned on sim building right here, things change as you go along. !

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../platform3.jpg

Here is a close up of the pedals. The large shock absorber on the side is there to kick the pedals on both sides of the flightdeck back to neutral. A steel bar actually connects the Captain and FO's pedals together.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../platform4.jpg

Another shot showing the flooring and beams. Steve and Ron were leveling everything as well as checking overall alignment. Looking good. We need to make sure we get Ron over more! Ron is going to tackle the Fibreglass A320 Shell shortly. Big job cutting and reassembling.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/podium7.jpg

Here is the latest shot (Dec 4) of the sim parts sitting on top of the podium. The rudder pedals are in their rough position and need some adjustment in terms of width between both sets. The rod that attaches them needs to be widened.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/podium8.jpg
Another view of the sim.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut1.jpg

This page will take a long time to load so hang tight!

I wanted to prove that I actually do some work around here!
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut2.jpg

Here you can see Ron drawing in the window outlines.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut3.jpg

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut4.jpg

Steve gets in on the act and does some "eyeballing"

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut5.jpg
Steve applies tape to the line strokes that will enable him and Ron to make tem, plates for the other side. Pretty smart!.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut6.jpg

Taped outlines are in place and almost ready for the templates. We adjusted the rear window somewhat after this shot. It appeared to be too long.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut7.jpg

Close up on the front window.
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut8.jpg
Ron and Steve doing up the templates and rechecking them.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut9.jpg
Me hard at work again!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...shellcut10.jpg
I was cringing at this point as Ron walked up and started cutting the shell. Getting this thing in my basement is going to be a tricky one.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...shellcut11.jpg

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...shellcut12.jpg
Cut in two sections.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...shellcut13.jpg

Cut in three sections.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...shellcut14.jpg

Removable Hardtop? Hmmm.. Breezy flying conditions I would think!

(Ron left the windows in place to maintain structural integrity)

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...shellcut15.jpg

Sectioned and ready for transport to see if they will fit down the stairs. Hopefully next week we take a run at this.

This is a quick update shot Joe sent over last week. Notice the detail in the outboard Glare area. The angled bottom section has been abig concern for Joe and I think he nailed it.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/josetup1.jpg

This shot is incredible. Look at the detail on this Pedestal, Foot Rests at the aft end, The Map pocket, our killer CNC cut panels! ( I will ignore the knobs, yikes!)

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...hellhome6a.jpg
After a great deal of handling and discussion the group managed to get 2/3 of the A320 Shell into the basement. We had it cut originally in four pieces and still needed to cut one more part. The top "roof" section is in the garage and will need to be cut in half. We just looked at the route to the basement and all stood there shaking our heads. Seemed bigger before!

Very special thanks to Ron who has been such a big part of the development of the sim lately. His input has pushed us forward in an area I would have been lost. (Steve! you too bro!)

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...hellhome2a.jpg

Steve ponders the "Convertible" A320 concept. I overruled. Hair gets messy at 320 kias and the top is down...

(This actually looks small in pictures. The area that we are working is about 10' x 10' (or about 3x3 metres) and we are squeezing by the sides now!)

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...hellhome1a.jpg

Steve looking things over. you can make out the bottom window shapes. Looks like we will have ample access to the sim even after the shell is finished. Most of the computers and wiring will end up in this nose section.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...hellhome4a.jpg

PC studies a poster Joe got us to compare the real A320 to what we are seeing. getting there! Looks like we need to move the assembly forward into the shell.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...hellhome5a.jpg
Steve grabs a quick shot while we talk about moving the built section of the sim forward.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../shellcut6.jpg

Just a "Before/After" shot. Ron says we will get it back to this shape in a short bit. I believe him! The guy is a whiz and Steve has that "look" everytime he sits in the flightdeck.

SPECIAL NOTE: Thanks again to our "Aerospace Friend" "R" who managed to get the shell and pedals for us. Hopefully he sees how serious we are! Thank you!

Ron secures the top section to the bottom. Really something to see this back together down here. Thanks Ron and Steve!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/sbuild9.jpg
Straight on shot. With Ron standing at the back you get an idea about how big this thing is.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/sbuild9a.jpg

And yet another view.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/sbuild9b.jpg
Thats sawdust floating around in front of the camera.. We cut some pieces and were filling our lungs with it! Wear a mask! Its quite tall in there actually. The blue speckle on the sidestick and pedestal are the "bumpy" speckle paint that we use to create a Vinyl look prior to final painting. you can see how that is done by reading Joe's excellent "Build Tip" page on that topic.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/sbuild9c.jpg
Steve and I try to get some perspective on the sizing and contemplate our next move.

Major surgery completed. I probably drove Steve and Ron crazy but they are still with the project! The Shell is now 4 inches lower than before. This lines up the window frames and the glare area. Ron and Steve also trimmed the podium on the front two corners and this has given us back some space! Steve checking over the fit of the components with the new height. Notice how Steve got the FO side done first...! Center ECAM panel section going back in place. Steve checks out a piece that Joe sent up. Tough little guy to get right but Joe measured the real aircraft in this area. One thing about Joe, very detailed in his building. Looking forward to seeing more of his sim soon. Steve came by with his son and we started the process of integrating the wood sections with the shell. Not that easy as we had to do alot of trimming. Once we got through that we put some of the panels back in place to get a look.
Steve's little guy checks out the sim. What a great help he was today and so eager to get flying.

Managed to get Steve and Ron over for some building. Ron was working on the structural elements needed in side the pedestal to support the new Backlit Nova Panels. Here is a shot showing the panels in place.
Here is a side shot showing the solid wood construction Ron added. This is an important phase as so much will need to be done in this area for wiring and later for use. Strength and accessability. Just ask Ron Wiens!
Ron again mesuring up the Overhead. He will be working on the framing and woodstructure for this part of the sim. Looking forward to seeing this up over our heads in that Shell. Thanks again Ron!
Here is a shot of the Overhead Panels we are now making. So far we have painted a fair bit on the revers for the lettering to show through. Next we need to finish up the Green paint so that we have a very realistic looking panel look. Results are very good and we have been getting great feedback from so many builders. Thanks for the emails!

The above image is of the A320 MCDU with some hardware in place. Here I am taking the
caps from some switches I finally found locally and checking them for fit. This MCDU
had to have the openings slightly adjusted to fit the caps. The Round switches are on order and
I only need to source the small top 12 LSK switches. Should be no problem. the plan now is to use the decals
that we have been using on the Standard Kits for the lettering on this switch. Other than that we can explore engraving
but the caps are actually concaved on the tops which might make it tough. Below you can see the same
setup being checked on a B777 kit I am doing up for A.M. over in Germany.
Below I show a closeup of the Miyama switches I will be using throughout the Flightdeck.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...dustandard.jpg
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/miyama.jpg The above shot is a closeup of the Miyama type switches that can be used in
numerous places throughout the NOVA Series A320 and 340 kits. EFIF,FCU, RMP, ACP
ECAM Warning, etc... These switches are going to help so much.
For those of you who having been asking about the B737NG kits here is a shot of the
first NOVA series NG Pedestal fresh from the engravers. This one was customed ordered
and I will be sure to post links to this project as it goes further along. Thanks to Patrick for his
patience on this job! These panels are not even rear painted yet so they will really look slick soon enough!

Above you can see the glare parts for the first B737NG kit. The color was custom ordered to match
some existing components. The NOVA series NG kit will be a "Slate" color which I am told is
a great match to the real aircraft. If you look closely you can actually see the "PLEXI BACKPLATE" I have been describing.
This one wil lsit behind the NOVA Panel adding a great deal of strength, Hold the Hardware as well as
allow light to shine right through to the lettering. Starting to make sense I think!! (The plexi parts are available with NOVA Panel orders)
Once I get my Dutch friends NG kit to him I have ot focus on the B777. The CRJ and
even a surprise type!!! (Hint: Not an Airliner, Not a Biz Jet!)
. Another quick shot of some of the Main Panel parts for the NG. If you look closely at the landing
gear cover plate you can see that I have made provisions for six clear spots for indication.
I wil be making available some sticker kits to use throughout the NG Flightdeck. Unlike the A320
there are numerous areas where "INDICATORS" are used and these decals will help the builder
to get that looking correctly with or without the actual holders.

The above image shows most of the windows now cut out of the shell. Inside you can see
that we took all the parts out while cutting!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...fullshell2.jpg

Captain's side with all window openings now cut. Steve and Ron are aiming to put some form
of glass or acrylic in place further on down the road. Really looking much better with these openings!
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...fullshell6.jpg The shot above shows how "Gutted" the interior was while we did this cutting. Rudder pedals
were left in place due to the difficulty in reinstalling them. Fancy Captains's Seat huh?

Another view showing the FO side and giving a clear view of the "View" forward!

Steve admires some of the cutting from inside. Steve and Ron have been a huge help in making
this Shell become such an integral part of the whole project.
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...fullshell5.jpg
FO side window looking in.
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...fullshell8.jpg
One of my favorite shots.. I wish I had straightened out the FO side Monitor shelf. Other than that it
is what I was hoping to see. Shape, A320 type shape. Next we have to trial fit the Overhead
Framework that Ron built. That is going to add a great deal to the overall look here..

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...overframe1.jpg
The above shot shows the overhead frame that is coming together very nicely. One of the things you can see here is the angle that the Overhead side panels are on. In this shot it looks alittle pronounced but that may be from the angle I shot it from. The section above the Overhead panels here will house the OVERHEAD CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL that I am developing. This will end up being an option for you builders out there

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...overframe2.jpg
Same shot as above but now showing the NOVA Panels we make in place. Steve and Ron have this close to trial fitting. Very excited to see this!
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...sidestick2.jpg
We have been very fortunate in the way of "real" and "FTD" parts. Special thanks to "R" and "T" for making these available for the project. No doubt, next to the Shell and Rudder Pedals this latest aquisition is going to add even more realism. These units are configured with potentiometers and should be quite easy to set up via a gameport. Below you can see that the F/O side is apart and needing reassembly.. Steve? LOL

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../2monitors.jpg

Steve and Ron worked all afternoon on the shelves and the rudder pedals. Steve has the Captain side pedals working from a mechanical standpoint. Next my Father In Law will setup the pedals for joystick input on the computer. Looking forward to that. Ron has two of the three monitors in place here in this shot. We are actually pretty close to the painting stage now and I am looking forward to seeing how Steve does on the Pedestal and sidesticks. I will have to find some nice looking carpet for the floor.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/checkin.jpg

Here is a shot of myself looking at the main instrument panel over the monitor. This is from the Standard kit. I am using that to size things then I will use my NOVA series panels. (Color on these latest shots is really bad, sorry!) One of the things Ron and I spoke about was trying to make sure that we left access to the monitor controls. On the real A320 there is a "Shelf" unit just below the PFD/ND display. We will make a "Dummy" version of one to cover the lower section of the monitor. We are also talking about adding a keyboard below the PFD/ND on the FO side for Squawkbox (On Line ATC) as well as running our software prior to EPIC.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ages/angle.jpg

Ron and Steve spent the afternoon working on the flightdeck. Ron focused on the monitor shelves and has them in place and ready to go. He used 3/4" thick plywood. This is a key are to watch as monitors really do weigh alot. Soon we will all be looking at LCD Flat Panel monitors I am sure. 15" versions have dropped in price and 17"s will follow. That will help so much.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/stick2.jpg

This is a shot of the sidestick after Steve cut the Sidestick Top section. Feels great in place. Don't mind the blue color, Steve is painting the Sidestick and Pedestal sections shortly.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/shelf1.jpg

Forward looking shot shoiwng the sidestick in place as well as the angled Monitor shelf. With our current setup we should be able to add a fake shelf unit and not see anything out of scale.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...erblackcap.jpg

Shot of the overhead with Black AML caps in place. These will be engraved soon and available to other builders as well.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/ronwpic.jpg

Allow me to introduce one of the best Sim builders on the planet. Ron Wiens. I have had the good fortune of meeting him last year and we have stayed in touch to the point that we are now working on several Sim Building related projects. Ron is truly a great "Thinker" and brings so much well thought out discussion into this project. I am looking forward to seeing the results of some of our work together. More on that soon!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/ronover.jpg

Ron wanted a shot of the way we were laying out the Overhead framing and this one captured it quite well. As you can see I am making plans for the complete Circuit Breaker section aft of the Main Overhead Section. For those of you builders wanting the ultimate in realism keep an eye on the page and I will show that section soon. The woodworking above is courtesy of Ron E. Serious handiwork from Ron, thank you!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ages/litup.jpg

I get numerous emailers from builders saying: "Light them up!" So I did. Ron and I were checking out the setup and I threw some light behind two of the panels. You'll have to picture it with Switches in there as well. These are all painted panels as well. No problem there. Steve and I are adding green sections in next and that wil look great once done. All of the NOVA panels will light up this way with the plexi backing panels in place.

Close up shot of a B777 Glare piece. Not painted on the reverse yet. This is from the sample I did up last week. Production starts on B777 Nova kits this coming week. More pics to follow. The entire Glare section of the B777 NOVA series is set for MIYAMA and AML type switches. We recently found a supplier for both types. We are also going to be showing our Engraved Caps on the page in a week or so. I have to do my set up and several other builders wanted Caps for there Sims. Honeywell Caps with engraving done will run a few dollars each. They take time to do so if you need them please give me some lead time. Our advice right now is to use "Caps" in place of real AML switches. If there is no functionality attached to a specific switch then simply place a properly engraved cap in its place. This will look correct and later can have a real AML switch added in.

I took a few minutes to mount the new "3D Nova MIPs" in the Sim to checek the fit. Almost perfect. We need to adjust a few minor things like the landing gear selector (Needs to be moved to the right). Next I will print out some Standby Guages that were drawn up ages ago and get them in place. (Dean Nandy did an excellent job on his, see our links page) Below the MIPs we will be making "Fake Shelves" to look like the real MIP setup. You can also see the Caps are missing on the Glare parts as they are off being engraved.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../newmains4.jpg

Another shot of the New Main Panele in place. We need to work on the finishing elements to get them perfectly to our liking but they are very close.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../miyamanow.jpg

Here is a shot of the EFIS and FCU Panels from our sim. My father in Law (Adrian) has gone ahead and mounted the Miyama switches into the plexi backers. The FCU also shows some AML type switches which we will be engraving shortly. Still examining the MIYAMA types regarding engraving or decals. Will update on that shortly. The Radio Management Panel will be an important panel while we start to add functionality. We plan on integrating it into our sim in a way similar to the real aircraft. We have no functional MCDUs just yet so we will utilize the RMP for NAV/COMM frequency adjustment.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/fulldeck.jpg

Steve and Ron worked more on monitors and managed to get all three Main Instrument Panel covers in place as well. As you can see we have turned on the PFD/ND. We are hapy to announce that we will be utilizing Project Magenta software. We looked at various issues prior to deciding what to go with and felt that PM offered us a complete solution that we could grow with. Special thanks to Jonathan and Enrico for their patience and expediency while we got configured. This is a top notch group of people and we are very happy to be a part of the growing PM group of builders utilizing this extraordinary software. We will certainly report back more on this topic as we gain experience. One thing I can say is that setup was actually a breeze. Far easier than I had thought.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../fulldeck1.jpg

You can tell Steve is mesmorized by the view! Great shot showing the "Lit Up" flightdeck with Project Magenta running.

Ron and Steve checking out the layout. Still so much work to do but it was certainly a milestone day at the A320Project!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ldeckfront.jpg

A straight on shot with Steve and Ron inside. I was trying to catch them with the lights off and only the glow of the PFD/NDs but that did not work. More practice needed. .

SgSteve checks out the new look of the sim. Still alot to do up there but its very encouraging to see this section go up. Very special thanks to my friend Achim who was dying to show everyone his Nova Overhead but waited for me to have this special moment! Thank you Sir!. Looking forward to starting on the Glare and Main area and some more wiring. Lots to do. Might even take her for a whirl!

First glance at the new NOVA 3D MIPS for the B777.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...playframe3.jpg

More to see with the Landing Gear Panel sitting nex to it. Color is actually much closer than this pic shows. I think the light bounces off the panels plastic protective sheet. The lower section is ready to hold the lower NOVA panels that are available in the MAIN/GLARE package.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/amlcaps.jpg

Samples of the engraved Caps for the AML type switches. This was a tough one to get done. I was quite amazed at the work that went into these pieces. You are looking at the only set of "prepainted" caps! After this set I wil engrave and send the "Paint Stick" along with your order!! Wow!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/ngdecals.jpg

Samples of the new B737NG decals kits that are now available. Email for details

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/rwdecals.jpg

Samples of the Throttle Decals made for RonWs sim. See this page for details on Ron's great setup. If you are looking to watch a master at work.. watch Ron build this excellent setup.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/glareend.jpg

Here is a shot of the EFIS panel and the Glare Wing Panel in our sim. Shows a few things, New engraved AML caps and Unpainted NOVA panels next to t apainted one (wing). You don't want to paint too thick on the back side but some paint helps the lettering to stand out well in day conditions.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ages/nov4c.jpg

Received a real Landing Gear Assembly last week. Perfect fit as well. Feels great! Special thanks to DS and DD.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...mages/nov4.jpg

This is a shot I took while the sim was at the gate after a quick test hop. Starting to really come together. I can't say enough about the Magenta software. You can see the top Center ECAM display is alive in this shot. Steve and I will add a 17" in the center section soon and allow the bottom display to come alive. Right now we use the ECAM display to show the Magenta CDU and FCU. With the bottom opened up we will still run that way and be able to see the Top display clearly.!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ages/nov4a.jpg

SNo luck getting the scenery to be visible with this camera. Working on that. Steve, Ron and I are working on the Rudder pedals right now, trying to get them integrateed into the sim. Looks promising. You can see the RMP and ACP on the pedestal are full of switches. All interfaced to the KE72 and allowing us to avoid using the keyboard for the most part. Not a permanent solution but one step at at time.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...e%20plates.jpg

The above shot is of some new parts that I am making for one of the most serious builders I have met. These Throttle Cover Panels have a waiting Throttle set to go on as soon as they arrive. Likely I will be able to get my builder/Friend to share his progress shortly. Quite something.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...cdu%20B747.jpg

The Boeing CDUs for the B747 and B777 NOVA kits. These really are more "Cover Plates" than anything as most of the work has to be done in behind. We are working hard on CDU/MCDU ideas that will simplify the process. Prototyping starts this month. Backlit mean anything on this?

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...47%20pdstl.jpg

Here is the B747 Pedestal in Prototype form. This is pretty close to the look we are going to have for the NOVA kits. This particular builder wanted us to go al the way in detail so there are some major shapes in here. Only issue is costing. All the layers and compund shapes add more time on to the process. I will have a B747 Info Page up shortly.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...47novamip3.jpg

First glance at the new NOVA 3D MIPS for the B747. If you look closely you can see that the openings have all been predrilled for our NOVA panel to attach to! We also show the "Display Trim" now in place. I know one happy builder waiting for me to pack and ship these. Any more? More B747 Nova parts to show soon. We have a fantastic set of pedestal panels coming out that will take things a step hgher! Watch the page over the next few weeks for more on that.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...47novamip4.jpg

The B747 "3D" NOVA MIP set in its entirety. Quite something to see. Looking forward to seeing these come together in a project.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../rawframes.jpg

For builders using our Acrylic NOVA MIPs we have created some "unfinished" versions that come with all the trimmings including Clear Plexi (shown above). These will be available starting next week.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../a320mipam.jpg

Samples of a Custom A320 "3D" NOVA MIP set. Our good friend Andreas M is anxiously awaiting these! I better get them to him or he will be over at Achim's house until Christmas!

Finishing your Sidestick Consoles
By Joe Ozegovich
We have provided you the dimensions. Now you can see first hand, one way that you can finish the consoles. I will take you step by step through the procedure I used to finish the consoles. One of the nice things about me prototyping it and posting the results is, you get to learn from my mistakes! And yes, you will make mistakes. Many small, that can be covered up. Some that, well, you just have to do it over. Always allow for error. Remember, every time you go back to fix something small, you expose your self to making a bigger mistake. That happened to me during the assembly of the Captains upper console. I just wasn't happy with the little bit of extra wood that stuck out. Well, I had to start all over again, because I cut the piece too small. A good tip, you can always take more off, but if you cut too much, you have scrap. I will assume that you have assembled the pieces. The first thing to do is fill all the holes and gaps that you made during the assembly of the pieces. Use quality wood filler, it is easy to use and does a good job. The directions say to "dampen surface before application", this is good advice, otherwise the filler doesn't want to stick. Refer to figure 1 for an example of the wood filling application.

Wait at least two hours to sand the filler down, more like a day. You don't want to rush a project like this, humidity adds to the drying time. When you are ready to sand, use fine grit sandpaper, 100 or finer. Make sure to wear a dust mask when sanding. It will get very cloudy wherever you do this. Don't be concerned if you have to do a second coat. This step is critical to the final appearance. When you think that a small blemish won't matter. Guess what, it does. I know this now. I thought that I had finished the back pretty nice. Well, there were still some little dips. Now, I look at the finished product, and I cringe. So make sure all blemishes are removed or treated. Keep plenty of sandpaper handy. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate the pieces that are sanded.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/figure2.jpg Figure 2
Now that you are comfortable with the results from sanding, lets move in the next phase, cleaning and painting. Make sure to clean up well, because paint doesn't stick too well to dust. First, you want to prime all the pieces. Use a good water based primer, it is easier to clean up. You will need to prime these pieces, otherwise, the paint would be inconsistent and will just soak into the wood, and wood filler. Again, be sure that all holes and cracks in exposed areas are filled and sanded. Figure 4 illustrates the primed pieces.

I tried the method that Peter suggested for simulating cracked vinyl. Smart man, worked great. All the trim (cushions) pieces, console tops have the cracked vinyl look. I used a brand that had a spray can. I spent US $7.50 for a set, two cans in a set, one for the base coat and one for the crackle coat. I almost finished one set for the upper console pieces. You will need this paint for the Pedestal, the Glareshield, and the Aft consoles if you choose to build those pieces. First you have to apply the base coat (Figure 5), you should apply several coats because that will give you a larger crack, more realistic. Wait for the appropriate times. You don't want to have to the whole thing over. Don't spray too far away, because the paint will dry before it hits the pieces. This happened to me on the crackle paint part. The distance was 6-8 inches. I must have been farther, because I had a lot of paint just rubbing off. Some of the paint didn't take; therefor I only had a little crackle paint applied. Because of this my cracks were small, and different than the correctly applied sides. I simply wiped off the paint that didn't take. I purchased the only colors that seemed to go, somewhat, with the true cockpit color was Midnight Blue and Gold. I suggest waiting a week for the paint to cure, before applying the final paint. Otherwise, it can start peeling off.

Now that you waited, it is time to paint the finishing coat.
Figures 6&7
I would use two coats, it makes a world of difference. I used a roller and brush. If you have a gun, I'm sure it will come out better.

Now that your paint has dried, it is time to add the hinges. I added hinges to the outboard side of the console. Out of view and works well for access. I also added Velcro to the inboard edges to provide more stability to the upper console. Use the cushy side of the Velcro on the base. Refer to Figure 8. Figure 9 illustrates the console after the hinges are installed

Figures 8&9

Time to make the consoles stable, and to make sure the edges don't get scraped up. I figure I will be moving them around a lot, and if you move around, its nice to have the bottoms that won’t scrape .Use washers as shims to ensure the base is level. Put the base on a flat surface, and check if it is level, use the washers if you see any imbalance. Drill the holes first, so that the wood doesn't split. Once it is level, install the skids on the four corners, make sure to add the shims before installing skids. The only thing left to do is to apply a coat of high-gloss clearcoat, to give that vinyl look. I have to wait a week for that.

Figure 11 shows how the cut at the bottom, makes it more realistic. Nice fit. This becomes desirable, because your feet will keep hitting the sides, if the cutouts are not there.

Here is what the consoles look like with all the other parts together.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...knobsample.jpg

Here is a close up shot of Steve's handiwork. Steve painted and detailed these knobs. Reallly nice work. We will be able to start supplying these shortly. We are targetting around $3 to $4 each.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/captseat.jpg

Good fortune was with us again as we took ownership of our Crew Seats. These are the same seats used in many Flight Training Devices (FTDs). We are just analyzing the best way to fix them to the Flightdeck Floor. One of the nice features of these Seats is the Swivel fefature that allows us easier access in and out.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/litup1.jpg

The above shot shows a new approach we are taking with regards to improving the overall lighting of our panels. The panel on the right is a new NOVA from the B717. On the left is the same panel but with some "difuser" material added to the reverse side. This Adhesive Vinyl material is able to disperse light quite evenly across the sheet. At the same time it totally imporves daytime viewing. We have worked with paint to achieve this but found this new approach excellent as well.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/ronrivet.jpg

Great shot of Ron working on the shell. Ron is reinforcing the structure by adding aluminum strips on the inside window frames and then rivetting together. Not only is it strong but it looks great! I might have to look at adding rivets around the full window area!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ges/rivets.jpg

Here is another shot of the rivets. Eventually we will paint the shell, the rivets will add a nice touch.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...es/steveng.jpg

Here is a glimpse at a custom project we are currently working on. Steve is helping me in a big way and I am thankful to have his expertise. Above, you can see Steve tightening some toggle switches. The Clear plexi backer has been painted to blend in better with the NOVA panels on top. You can see a few Decals from the kit we make. This color is lighter than our usual NG color but available as well.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/ngover12.jpg

The B737NG Overhead, Main section. Still have to add the "AFT" portion and the front Angled parts. Really something to see this go together. I wish our 320 Overhead was this far along! Soon... I still have to add some graphical elements to the above. You can see one of the Knobs Steve created. Steve has agreed to help produce these as we get so many people asking for them. We also found some great adjustable Rotary Selectors, 2 to 12 step ones. Excellent for building.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...stevepete1.jpg

Here is a pic of myself (Left) and Steve. You can see that we have torn the interiour of the sim down yet again as we work on various elements. One of the biggest steps we will be taking is with an "Interface" system currently in develpment. We have an amazing software/hardware person working closely with us on a setup that will allow us to communicate with FS, Magenta and more. Details to be announced soon. Test test test..

KEVIN SAKER UPDATES US ON HIS SIM

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../images/07.jpg
If I had to point my finger at the person that pushed me down the road of making my own simulator I would have to point to Kevin Saker. Kevin's amazing articles on the topic were truly the blueprints for going forward. Kevin showed us that with some ingenuity and tenacity it could be done. Since those articles appeared so much has changed. What has not is the "thinking". Innovation.

One last overview shot with more light on the sim. To read Kevin's work simply go to the "How To" section at www.flightsim.com and look for his multi part series. It is a "Must Read" prior to building.
Very Special Thanks To Kevin For Sharing These Excellent Pics With Us And For Being Such An Inspiration.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../firewarn2.jpg

Second look at the "Fire" warning annunciators for our overhead. Steve came up with a really smart way to get them red. Automotive Lens Repair Kit. Used for fixing damaged brake lights. This material is a difuser by nature and sticks forever! I designed each unit to house 6 LEDs. I need to make another piece to let the LEDs do their magic. Next we paint our trim parts red and mount.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../ngdecals3.jpg

Some more samples of B737NG Decals. These are primarily for the Overhead Gauges. This is actually two sets.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...atinstall2.jpg

Steve and Ron line up the Captain's Seat. These seats are really adjustable. With that and the rudder pedals being adjustable as well its a little tricky deciding on the perfect spot.

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...atinstall1.jpg

Steve eyes the positioning one more time. The joke around here is that Steve and Ron practice everything on the Captain's side of the sim (my side of course!) prior to doing and installations on the FO side (their side of course!) Basic rul of thumb is if you want to fly in this sim ask for the right seat!

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...mages/fly2.jpg

I promised few shots with the sim on and the scenery showing. Need alot more practice on capturing this sort of pic. I will have to get a better camera over here. Maybe a better projector too! (Let a guy dream huh?

https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...mages/fly1.jpg

Its nice having the sim fired up again. We have been able to do some flying with only two keyboards in the sim. One of the nice things about the Magenta suite is the FCU (MCP for you Boeing guys) can practically run all the elements that are needed. I need the other keyboard only until I wire up a few things. We are awaiting our interface setup that Brent is working on for us and will be adding more functionality soon enough. Steve, Ron and I were working out more Thrust Lever issues (Throttles for you Boeing folk!). Looking very promising. We think we have some very realistic looking thrust levers coming soon as well. Things are looking up!

I have been thinking about this section of the overhead in my sim forever. Finally had some time to get it done. This is the Overhead Circuit Breaker Panel of the A320. I managed to get my hands on enough old Circuit Breakers to fill it up as well. Should look pretty slick when done.
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...20overcb21.jpg
aHere is the complete Overhead for our sim. I will do a tutorial this week showing a new approach to bringing the lettering out without having to paint. Will also show step by step how this all goes together. Looking forward to seeing this go into the sim. Pedestal is next. Time to get moving...
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...s/project1.jpg
Special thanks to "T. H." for letting this fellow go. Should look right at home in the pedestal.
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a.../espenover.jpg
Here is a shot from Espen S who is working on a B737NG Standard Kit. Truly excellent attention to detail here. Doing the decals on these kits takes alot of patience. I am looking forward to seeing how things progress and will make some room for his updates. Thanks Espen!

Here is a shot of the NG 3D MIP set. This one is heading out on its first "Long Haul" flight tomorrow.
https://www.avsim.com/hangar/flight/a...ages/ng3d4.jpg
Second shot showing the Display Frames and lower Panel section. I have some items holding it on an angle. This set and a "Main/Gare" package gets you far into your project. The B737NG is not as big as some people think. Figure on five feet across.
