The request for a license verification is a normal practice. It is part of the international agreement as a a safety and security issue. If you have a license from any country, a verification is needed. How long it takes to get a verification varies from one country to another. US FAA license is quicker to send verification because it is very much electronic.

If you have a license issued by GACA and you want to use it for example in Argentina, then the Argentinian aviation authority will request verification from GACA... and so onn....
