The FAA have released a safety alert to operators (SAFO) "to inform air carriers and operators about a safety hazard related to standard issue coffee filter packages" reporting that a number of flight attendants received first and second degree burns when coffee filter packages burst in flight during coffee preparation.
The hazardeous situation appears to be created by a pressure build up in the pre-packaged coffee filter package while installed in the coffee pot drawer. Usual precursors to the events are water overflow from the drawer and a hissing sound. After lifting the coffee pot handle the filter containing hot coffee grounds can burst causing burns to face, neck, hands, arms and torso.
Measures to mitigate the risk is to make sure, that packages are not folded, use of only one package per pot and placing the package into the drawer seam side down. If water flows down the drawer and a hissing sound is heard, step aside, do not lift the handle, turn off the unit and brief all crew members.
The FAA recommends all air carriers should add cautionary instructions and procedures to the flight attendants' manuals and to the training programmes.
