Boeing faces more Dreamliner787 problems

Boeing is once again facing questions about the reliability of its 787 Dreamliner after two airlines—Norwegian Air and Poland's LOT—complained about a series of technical glitches.
On Wednesday, Boeing sent a team of executives, including Commercial Airplanes chief Ray Conner, to Oslo to meet with Norwegian Air executives, Boeing spokesman Doug Alder Jr. said.
He declined to discuss details of the conversation.
"We can say that how the 787 performs in service for our customers is paramount for the entire Boeing team," he said in an email to Today in the Sky. "Any impact to our customers' operations is not satisfactory. Our focus is working in partnership with Norwegian to address the 787 issues it is experiencing."

Kjos said there were no discussions about compensation but that he expects Boeing to take its share of responsibility for the problems.
"Most important is to have the aircraft running before we know the cost. That's at a later stage," he told Reuters.
The Seattle Times reports that Norwegian's new Dreamliner long-haul flights to New York and Bangkok were disrupted this month by three "apparently unrelated component failures."
Problems have ranged from a leaky oxygen bottle that depleted the emergency oxygen supply to pilots and a power-supply issue in the electric brake system. Flights were delayed and canceled as a result.
Meanwhile, Poland's LOT this week said grounded its fleet of five Dreamliners this month because there was a fuel filter missing in each of the two Rolls-Royce engines on one plane, the Seattle Times reports.
LOT spokeswoman Barbara Pijanowska-Kuras told the Times that the issue posed "no threat to flight safety" because each engine has two filters, but that the entire fleet was grounded for inspection. A second 787 was also found to have a missing fuel filter in one engine.

The missing filters have been replaced and the planes are back in service, LOT told the Times.
"No other 787s in the worldwide fleet are impacted," Boeing's Alder said. "Boeing is conducting a thorough review of the cause of this and will implement the appropriate changes to ensure it does not happen again."
Boeing's Dreamliner has been hailed as one of the most innovative planes in years because it is 20% more fuel efficient and has 20% fewer emissions than similar planes. The jetliner is made from composites, a first for the industry. It is also the first Boeing plane to use rechargeable lithium ion batteries.
The batteries posed problems earlier this year after a battery caught fire on an All Nippon Airways flight in January. Other incidents forced the Federal Aviation Administration to ground all Dreamliners for four months.
Not long after the Dreamliner was allowed to fly again, a fire broke out on a 787 parked at London's Heathrow Airport. The fire was not related to the batteries but the cause has yet to be determined.
