2 New Zealand men die after late-night microlight airplane crash in poor flying conditions
WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Two New Zealand men died in an airplane crash Sunday after taking a microlight aircraft on a late-night flight in poor weather conditions.
The two men left North Island's Wairoa Airdrome at 3:15 a.m. local time (1515 GMT Saturday), and a friend on the ground raised the alarm when they failed to return after about an hour.
The Rescue Coordination Center New Zealand said night weather conditions at the time were unfavorable for flying, with heavy showers, lightning and patches of fog.
The center said a rescue helicopter found the wreckage about 120 meters (yards) from the end of the airstrip at daybreak.
The identities of the men were not released. Both were experienced microlight pilots.
Wairoa Aero Club secretary Richard Tollison told National Radio he could not understand why the pair would try to fly in poor weather in the middle of the night.
Civil Aviation Authority spokesman Bill Sommer said two safety investigators were traveling to the crash scene to investigate.
