A 65-year-old man is dead after a mid-air collision between his ultralight craft and a light plane in Victoria's east.
The crash happened around 11:30am AEDT at the Latrobe Valley Airport in the state's east.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) says it appears the crash happened as the two planes were trying to land at the airport.
CASA spokesman Peter Gibson says the ultralight plane burst into flames and hit the ground.
He says the 15-year-old student pilot of the light plane, a Cessna, managed to land safely and was uninjured.
"The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is going to be looking into this accident," he said.
"They're preparing to get to the scene to gather evidence and obviously the Civil Aviation Safety Authority will be looking to learn all the lessons we can from this tragedy."
Mr Gibson says the cause of the crash is still unclear.
"It's very unusual: mid-air collisions are very, very rare," he said.
"However of course the consequences are very severe, and unfortunately this has led to at least one fatality."
